Desalination has a vital role to play in Australia’s long term water security and the country’s sound economic future. Seawater desalination provides a sustainable water source offering insurance for Australia’s water supply against drought, climate change and population growth.
Australia is the driest inhabited continent in the world and its need for clean drinking water continues to grow with the population expected to expand 50% from 2010 to 2050. In the absence of other climate resilient water sources, seawater desalination is uniquely placed as a means of augmenting traditional water supplies.
The Desal Discovery Centre (DDC) provided a state-of-the-art media and conference room and an Edulab, a purpose built science and water testing laboratory. Visitors were given a hands-on experience in scientific enquiry and discovery, exploring water and desalination technologies in a way typically inaccessible to schools. Various activities promoted the latest developments in Australia’s desalination industry and offered age appropriate experiments, all of which highlighted different aspects of desalination.
