The Bureau of Meteorology has launched the Climate Resilient Water Sources web portal (CREWS), an interactive site providing comprehensive mapping and information of desalinated and recycled water sources for over 350 sites across Australia, both publically and privately owned and operated.

The Spinifex community at the remote Tjuntjuntjara, about 700km east of Kalgoorlie, will soon be part of a pilot project which will test the effectiveness of desalination technology paired with renewable energy. The community’s bore water supply will eventually be supplemented with water from a solar powered, vacuum assisted, membrane distillation desalination unit, through an NCEDA research project.

New climate forecasts warn of 10% streamflow losses into Melbourne’s catchments and 25% losses for South-West Western Australia. The Climate Commission’s new 2013 Critical Decade report, released this month, says many parts of southern Australia including Canberra, Melbourne, Perth and south-western New South Wales face adverse impacts from reduced rainfall.

Australia’s desalination research centre chief has dismissed claims being made in some media outlets that recent fish and wildlife deaths in South Australian waters could have anything to do with its desalination plant.
